Why I Dont Like The C Word Compromise. On MsCareerGirl.com
Why I Dont Like The C Word Compromise. On MsCareerGirl.com Theres a word Ive come to be highly suspicious of. The C word. Whenever I hear it, Im alerted to be careful of whats coming next. Because whats next may be pretty unpleasant. Whats the C word Im talking about? No, not THAT one. Compromise. To Compromise or To Be Compromised That is The Question Compromise has two very different meanings. One is supposed to be an admirable way to achieve an acceptable outcome to a conflict. But the other definition is more accurate in many applications: Compromise (verb): to accept standards that are lower than is desirable. Often, when we compromise it means weve given up something thats important to us. Sometimes, perhaps often, that can mean were accepting things that are lower than is desirable. And thats where the challenge is. Compromise vs. Authenticity In the last few years, weve heard a lot about authenticity. About how being authentic is a desirable characteristic. But in doing life, being authentic, being true to ourselves, is often at odds with the demands of being a part of our human world. Too often, in the end authenticity loses out to compromise. In your personal life but also especially in your professional life, there frequently seems to be a conflict. On the one hand, there are your goals and aspirations. On the other, theres your values and beliefs. And the paths to either dont seem to follow the same map. So how do you resolve the conflict? Do you compromise? Do you sacrifice your goals and aspirations? Or betray your values and beliefs? The Journey To Authenticity In reality, choosing to be authentic may not be a destination, but more of a journey of its own. In her book The Art of Authenticity, author Karissa Thacker says that the more you contemplate authenticity in the small moments, the greater the liklihood you would be in shape to behave authentically in the big, defining moments. And as always, it begins by asking questions. She poses these as a start: What are my strengths? How do I work best? What are my values? Where do I belong? What can I contribute? From that basic examination of self, you then build on and interact with the outside world. Until, ultimately, there is complete congruency. In the extreme, being authentic means that we observe what is appropriate for each given moment. Our actions are not dictated by conditioning, fears or expectations. Every moment is unique and cannot be predicted, nor can the outcome of our actions. But again, we live in the real world, and its more like building the muscles of authenticity rather than claiming a title. The Real World Test Theory is always so . . . theortical. But what about the real world? Ms. Thacker suggests the following seven steps to authenticity: Try a new behavior as opposed to just thinking about it. Write down on a scale of 1-10 how effective it was. Did it work? How did it feel to you on an internal level? Was it awkward? If you were to do it again, what would you do differently? What did you learn? Where else might this new behavior work or not work? Repeat. If you have a real interest in moving away from compromise and into being authentic, youll want to check out her book. In both your personal and professional life, living authentically holds the keys to much greater satisfaction. And, not surprisingly, its evident that it also leads to greater success. ABOUT DR. 401(k) Plan Advice Contributions and Investments
401(k) Plan Advice Contributions and Investments Before autumn starts flying by too fast, take a moment to pay attention to your retirement account. This is a good time for to check in on a few fronts: how much youâre contributing, what investments youâre choosing, and how your funds are allocated. Start with your contribution levels. At minimum, you should be saving at least up to the company match in the plan, if there is oneâ"even if you have student loan debt. This is free money, so if you are falling short of the match, youâre essentially walking away from additional compensation. If youâre in your 30s, you should aim to put aside at least 10% or 15% of your pay, not including the employer match. And if you are in your 40s or 50s, you should be maxing out your plan to the federal limit of $18,000. Check your allocation. Are you taking the right amount of risk? Many like to rely on the old calculation of 100 (or maybe 110 or 120) minus your age to determine the allocation to stocks. But a formula like that doesnât take into account your comfort with swings in the market. Thatâs why it is advisable to take a risk assessment questionnaire, which is available on most retirement plan provider sites. Just remember that you may overstate your ability to tolerate risk, especially now that the market has come roaring back since 2009. To get an accurate reading, try to remember how awful you felt during the 2008-2009 plunge. Once you walk through the test, most sites will populate a recommended portfolio allocation with funds that match your feelings about risk and your investment time horizon. Donât drive yourself nuts fine tuning the mix. Having a game plan, and sticking to it, is more important than whether your portfolio is 60% stocks/40% bonds or 55%/45%. While you are at it, be sure to create a plan for rebalancing â" or sign up for auto-rebalancing, if your plan offers it â" so that your allocation remains in check. Reassess your funds. Your employer 401(k) may offer you a limited set of options, but aim to use index funds whenever possible, because they are the cheapest way to invest. If you are just starting off, you may be tempted to use a target date fund. Be careful, though, because some of these funds are riskier than many people realize. If you can find an allocation that works and your plan does auto-rebalancing, that might be a better option.
